A theme makes decorating simple. Plus they often have mementos the expectant mom can keep for her memory box or scrap book. But you don't have to choose a theme if you want to stay away from the cutesy decor especially if you are planning a co-ed party.
My Personal Experience: At my co-ed party we had a mixture of the cute for the women and well, BBQ for the men. This meant a buffet table with low fat snacks and a batch of marinated meat in addition to the typical finger foods so the men could escape out to the BBQ when we women started talking about lactation, labor and baby nurseries. We were together as a group for most of the time, but it was nice for both genders to be able to split up once in awhile.
Elegant invitations, flowers, china rather than paper plates, candles, pastel cloth and party supplies might be your choice. The cost will be higher and the work will be greater, but you will definitely have created a memorable baby shower.
Another option is homemade decorations. You can round up some older children and friends, break out the crayons, choose teddy bears or ducks and let your creativity out. I've seen this done before and it created a charming, childish atmosphere. It was very touching to the parent's-to-be that the hostess and friends went to so much trouble. They told me it was also a lot of fun to do.
