Baby shower etiquette has changed quite a bit. The old fashioned rules no longer apply. You can have a baby shower for a first, second or third child. You can plan it at any time of the day for as long as you'd like. Who should host the baby shower? Anyone! In the past it wasn't acceptable for any family member to host the baby shower. The important thing is for someone to take the initiative and for friends and family get together to celebrate and support the happy couple.
Traditional baby showers are just for the mom-to-be. Until the last couple of decades Dad wasn't expected to need the support of friends in the same way. Happily this is changing. The focus has been so much on the mother that Dad is often left in the background. This is as much a life changing event for him as it is for her and male friends often enjoy being able to attend as well.
